Welcome to the English Language Arts

The Prince William County Public Schools English Language Arts program promotes the development of a continuum of literacy skills and strategies for students in kindergarten through grade twelve. This continuum includes processes critical to reading, writing, speaking, listening, information management, and the use of technology.

English Language Arts Textbook Adoption Public Comment

The Office of Student Learning of Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) is providing community members of Prince William County an opportunity to review textbooks currently being analyzed for possible adoption. These texts include books approved by the Virginia Department of Education for school divisions to consider in their local selection process.

Committees at each grade level are currently evaluating materials. Teachers, parents, and administrators have representatives on these committees. Criteria used for evaluation include alignment with the Virginia Standards of Learning and the curriculum of PWCS; logical sequence of instruction, age, grade, and reading level appropriateness; freedom from ethnic, racial, gender, religious, age, or political bias; quality and variety of assessment opportunities; equity; technology integration; teacher support; and cost.

To examine these resources virtually, use the websites below and provide feedback electronically in the English Language Arts Textbook Adoption Public Comment Microsoft form by December 18, 2020. Directions are posted on the PWCS English Language Arts website. Your comments will be considered with the recommendations made by each of the committees. If you have any questions or need further information, contact the English Language Arts office by email at Thorpejx@pwcs.edu.
